Screen Windows

Open windows take in fresh air and sunshine. But it also invites insects and dust. To enjoy both the fresh air and sunshine without the pests, install screens on your windows.

Depending on your location, decide which screen material to use. If you are near the beach, plastic screens would be better since metal screens rust faster with air coming from the sea. Take measurements, then depending on your window type, choose an appropriate frame size and material. It would be a good idea to have a removable screen along with the frame to make cleaning and repair easier.

Stowing away your ladders, Properly

//"ladderhanger"The last post tackled the safety aspect of ladders and their use, now we’d tackle the storage of such a wonderful tool that can be quite a security risk if left lying around the house. How often have you heard on the news that a burglary happens with the homeowner’s own ladder being used by the burglar for their dastardly acts. There are specific ladder stow-away hardware that allows you to either hang them horizontally or vertically with a provision for locks and chains to prevent unauthorized use. They can be hung in the garage and still locked to prevent break-ins on the upper levels of the home which are more often than not left with open windows and doors. Keep on reading!

Ladder Safety

laddersafetySince the early days when dad used to do all the stuff today’s tradesmen did, DIY has been in the blood of the millions of Americans and people all over the world who love a challenge and a job well done. Sadly, since those days, the numbers of injuries related to ladders and the falls they can cause are also on the rise due to more and more people opting to do their own home renovations due to the ever tightening economy. Ladders can be a man’s best friend if used properly and when selecting the best one for the job. If you don’t want to have several in the garage, you can easily rent one on a daily basis from tool rental companies that are only too eager to the need for such equipment. Keep on reading!

Recession – Comeback of the DIY Warrior

diy_1As the recession tightens its grip over the world, it brings about a revival in a favorite past time of days gone by, DIY. Do-It-Yourself used to be a fad often associated with dad who always wanted to do stuff in the house with his own two hands. Through sweltering heat and freezing weather it worked and the jobs got done. Sometimes taking longer than it should but, it always results in a piece or work you have to just love (or risk the wrath of your dad!).

In today’s cash strapped economy, more and more people are opting to do their home improvements by themselves as much as they could to save on labor costs and materials (in theory that is). It brings together the long forgotten muscle memories when you used to know how to saw wood and hit nails with a hammer (hopefully avoiding your fingers!). It brings together the family who do their part for the common good, as it should have always been. A time forgotten and replaced with our fast paced life and stresses.

House Motif

Due to the dangers of the outside world, more and more people are finding out ways to sedate their boredom within the safety of their homes instead of going out and so that they can save some money. This is done by creating a personalized entertainment room right at your homes. If you wish to make one yourself, like the one’s based on a 1930’s movie plush motif; making use of blood red, dark woods and gold accents. For the texture, use red felt or if you can afford it, velvet. Color the edges of the room in mahogany. Opt for a cosmopolitan and classic geometric-style wall-to-wall carpet for your floors. Use plush, upholstered chairs and couches as well as reclining ones. Install a mini fridge in the color of black or royal blue for that theater effect. Use prefabricated DVD holders to save money and flaunt style. And lastly, don’t forget the flat screen.

Window of Opportunities

Windows – they let the fresh air in, keep the dust, rain and snow out, welcome the sunshine and give you a sight of the wonderful outside world. It is also instrumental in our energy conservation efforts. Non-tinted windows illuminate the room during the day, and night lights are no longer necessary when the moon is out, or when the streetlights are on. Double glazed windows are special windows with insulating features – it helps maintain the temperature inside the house. So when it is raining hard or the snow is thick, the room is kept warm, and the space heater’s machine won’t have to consume too much electricity.

Storm Windows

Storm windows protect your home from strong winds and rainwater. These can be installed inside or outside the existing windows. Indoor storm windows are an advantage to houses that have exterior window designs that need to be preserved. These can be removed during summer to let more air in.

Aside from protecting the house from strong winds and rain, storm windows serve as added insulation especially during winter. This adds to your energy efficiency efforts. It can also reduce the noise that penetrates through the windows, either going in or out.

There are also storm shutters to protect glass windows, storm doors to protect door exteriors, and storm shelters as an emergency hiding place during storms.

Add life to your windows

Are you into themes, but cannot redesign your entire house every so often? Try dressing up your windows with curtains. You can choose any theme and a curtain color and design can match it. It’s an economical way to redesign your home.

For an outdoor feel, use light-colored curtains with floral designs. Country style curtains and lace curtains also give a “homey” feel. For those who prefer to have the elegant feel, contemporary style, cape cod and tab top curtains are best. Other curtain designs provide insulation to keep warm air out and let in cool air.
